What to Know About Your San Francisco Baby Photography Session

Choosing A Date for Your Baby’s Session

The first year of your baby’s life is full of new experiences and milestones. The most common ages for families to book baby photos are newborn, 6 months and one year. Newborn photography sessions can be scheduled when baby is between 5 days and 6 weeks old. The older baby is, the less sleepy they will be, so that is one thing to keep in mind when scheduling.

A 6-month-old baby photo session is fun milestone to capture because often baby is sitting around this age. Then when baby is around one year, we’ll be able to capture them getting close to the big milestone of walking. Even when babies are not yet walking, they are often able to stand while holding their parents’ hands.

Other common ages to photograph babies are a 4 months and 9 months. 4-month-olds are fun because they are so expressive, and they may even be pushing themselves up a bit during tummy time – such sweet photos! At 9 months, babies are typically not yet walking, but might sit in a chair for a cute picture, and they also interact a lot with me as the photographer.

Basically, there is no wrong age for baby photography – you’ll get something different and lovely at each stage!

Decided Where you Session Will Be in San Francisco

For younger babies, such as newborns, your home is the perfect place for a session. I travel to my clients’ homes and bring everything I need for beautiful, modern portraits along with me.

For older babies, at-home or indoors can both work well. We’ll discuss location options and plan just the right fit for your portraits.

Prior To Your Session

After booking, we’ll have a planning meeting to discuss all the details of your baby photo session. From location, to outfits, to timing, we’ll have it all covered! I’ll even help you plan what artwork you’d like for your home with a custom gallery wall design if you’d like. When planning for a series of baby portrait sessions in one year, I’ll design a gallery for you that will fit them all. A few days before your session, I’ll send you a reminder email with all the details, and you’ll be set for a relaxing, delightful session!

What to Expect the Day of Your Baby’s Photo Session

For newborns, sessions can take anywhere from 1.5 – 2.5 hours. This may sound long, but it goes by very quickly. Time is built in for feeding, diaper changes and soothing baby as needed. I am trained in infant safety, so I will take excellent care of your baby as we go along.

For older babies, we’ll normally spend around an hour together, but that can vary a bit with each family. My sessions are always playful to get the best smiles and natural expressions from everyone.

Family and sibling images will be a part of every session, unless you’d like to focus on baby only.
