Do you remember visiting a toy store as a child? Not a toy aisle crammed between the gardening section and automotive supplies section. Instead, a real toy store dedicated solely to childhood fun, filled to the brim with fantastic opportunities for play. The kind that stirred that magical feeling as you walked through its doors and made you smile with unbridled excitement at the possibilities? Oh, the nostalgia! If only we could bring that back for our kids. Oh wait, WE CAN! The Wooden Horse, a local treasure, has proudly been providing childhood nostalgia to its community for quite some time. So if you haven’t been, it’s time to share that toy store magic with your littles and watch their excitement unfold.
This neighborhood toy store, established in 1971 by Karen Scarvie, is packed with games, cuddly companions, toys to boost the imagination, and kits to cure boredom. This toy store has provided quality and endless fun for our modern-day little ones for over 5 impressive decades! While this store may not be large, each staff member’s heart is dedicated to keeping the true spirit of childhood alive and well. Kids love visiting their cozy nooks and crannies that invite curious explorers desperate to discover something new. Their collection of toys brings imagination, creativity, and giddy delight back to playtime.
The options seem endless as you browse their array of fun, adorable, excellent quality, and engaging products that spark imaginative play and creativity. The Wooden Horse even provides complimentary gift wrapping! Perfect for those last-minute birthday parties!

They take playtime and the services they provide seriously. They offer a unique training program for staff members called Wooden Horse University, where they will obtain a special degree, “Masters of Applied Play,” upon completion. This unique training is a series of interactive and peer-led courses that are specially designed to help staff understand child development, the value of open-ended toys, and the importance of engaging play. While it may not be a college, this university creates “graduates” of playtime to help every customer find the perfect selection. In addition, their website offers educational guidance on selecting great toys for your kids.
